The past few days seem to have been full of incredible news stories across the globe - everything is moving so quickly. Here are just 3 pieces of news in the last week – all fundamental pieces of environmental news, some dreadful and some good but all equally important. I’ve picked these out of what could have been many many more.
ScienceDaily (Apr. 29, 2009) — Satellite images show that icebergs have begun to calve from the northern front of the Wilkins Ice Shelf – indicating that the huge shelf has become unstable. This follows the collapse three weeks ago of the ice bridge that had previously linked the Antarctic mainland to Charcot Island.
Scottish Marine Bill arrives 30th April 2009!
After nearly ten years of MCS campaigning for better protection for Scotland’s seas, MCS warmly welcomes the arrival of the Scottish Marine Bill. Protection and recovery of Scotland’s seas must be at the very heart of the final Bill, including a network of marine protected areas.
Climate Change Bill Strengthened – 5/5/09
The Scottish Government is taking further steps to strengthen its Climate Change Bill.
Climate Change Minister Stewart Stevenson said that targets to reduce harmful greenhouse gases will now inlclude a new interim target to cut emissions by 34 per cent by 2020. However, Ministers intend to introduce an amendment to the Bill to ensure this rises to at least 42 per cent as soon as the EU agrees to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent by 2020.
